GEORGE TOWN, June 13 — An Uber driver claimed trial to intentionally using criminal force to outrage the modesty of a female passenger, at the magistrate's court here today.

Muhammad Sukri Ramli, 30, was earlier charged with committing the offence against a 43-year-old Vietnamese woman at about 3.56pm on June 6, while driving his car from Lintang Paya Terubong to Jalan Argyll.

The unrepresented Muhammad Sukri was charged under Section 354 of the Penal Code that carries a jail term of up to 10 years, a fine, whipping, or any two combinations upon conviction.

Magistrate Catherine Nicholes allowed him bail at RM6,000 with one surety.

Deputy public prosecutor Nurul Izzah Shahruddin earlier applied for bail to be set at RM10,000, while Muhammad Sukri asked for this to be reduced on the basis that he has to support his wife and child.

He also claimed to be heavily in debt, which he was repaying through the Credit Counselling and Debt Management Agency.

Muhammad Sukri was also ordered to report to the Sungai Nibong police station every Monday until the trial of the case ends.

The case was set for mention on July 18.
