GEORGE TOWN, June 7 — An Uber driver landed in hospital after he was beaten up by a group of more than 10 angry men for allegedly molesting a passenger.

A group, led by the alleged molest victim, attacked the driver behind a restaurant at Lintang Paya Terubong 1 today.

North-east district police chief Asst Comm Anuar Omar said the driver was taken to the Penang Hospital in an ambulance for treatment.

“He sustained injuries on his head, hands and left leg from the incident,” he said.

Anuar said the driver had picked up a female Vietnamese passenger at about 4pm yesterday and was heading towards Argyle Road from Lintang Paya Terubong.

“The suspect is believed to have unzipped his pants, bared his private parts and placed the victim’s hands on his private parts,” he said.

The police will be investigating the driver under Section 354 of the Penal Code for use of criminal force with intent to outrage modesty.

Uber has been in the news in recent weeks for the wrong reasons with a spate of crimes allegedly involving its drivers in Malaysia and elsewhere in the world as well.

Yesterday, police arrested an Uber driver in Kajang for allegedly leaving two teens at a location where they were subsequently robbed by two men on a motorcycle.

Last month, a pregnant passenger alleged she was robbed by an Uber driver on the way to Puchong and she later blamed the incident as the cause of her miscarriage.
