PETALING JAYA, June 4 — Police will record statements from doctors who treated cadet Zulfarhan Osman Zulkarnain prior to and on the day of his death on June 1.
Selangor Criminal Investigation Department Senior Assistant Commissioner Fadzil Ahmat said all those involved in treating Zulfarhan will be called up to facilitate investigations.
This, he added, included those at a private clinic where the navy cadet was taken for treatment, as they failed to report Zulfarhan’s condition a week before his death.
On Zulfarhan’s death, Fadzil said investigators were in the midst of recording statements and identifying the perpetrators of the crime.
To date, 32 varsity undergraduates, mostly cadets from the National Defence University of Malaysia and four from University Tenaga Nasional (Uniten) remain in police custody.
On claims a bomoh was also sought, Fadzil declined to say as investigations were still underway.
It was reported a bomoh had identified Zulfarhan as the thief that stole one of the suspects’ laptop which resulted in the assault on the aspiring serviceman.
“We have yet to confirm such a story. If indeed there is such an individual, we will take down his statement as well,” he said, refusing to divulge further details.
On June 1, navy cadet Zulfarhan, 21, an undergraduate from the National Defence University of Malaysia was pronounced dead at Serdang Serdang Hospital at 10pm.
He was reportedly scalded with a steam iron, beaten with belts, rubber pipes and hangers by fellow varsity mates on May 13, 20 and 21 respectively.
He was sent to Assalam Clinic in Bandar Baru Bangi by three fellow cadets on May 27, and was scheduled to return to the same clinic for follow-up treatment.
On May 31, two fellow cadets found him unconscious at an apartment they were residing in Bangi, and took him to hospital..
Those detained for questioning are being held under remand until Thursday to facilitate murder investigations.
