KUALA LUMPUR, May 27 — Ride-hailing firm today sought to assure Malaysians that its services were safe and reliable, after a pregnant woman was allegedly robbed by one of its drivers this week.

In a statement after 26-year-old Wong Mei Yan announced today that she miscarried and was planning to sue the firm, Uber said it has cooperated with the police since it was informed of the incident.

“This incident is deeply upsetting and we truly regret what Mdm Wong has experienced. We facilitate millions of rides in Malaysia every week and even one incident like this is one too many,” it said.

Uber added that it took the safety seriously and was continually working to make its offerings safer, more reliable and more affordable.

Wong previously alleged she was robbed at knifepoint by an unknown man who was sitting in the front passenger seat of her Uber ride that was scheduled from Mid Valley to Puchong on Monday night.

The driver and his accomplice then drove another five kilometres and dropped Wong off at Koi Kinrara at 10.20pm, almost one hour after her ride started at 9.30pm.

Police have arrested the driver from the incident and are still hunting the accomplice.
