KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 27 — Umno Overseas Clubs (UOC) monitor the activities of Malaysian students overseas to prevent them from being involved in extremism.

Auckland OUC president Siti Nurbaya Esa said they have a close relationship with the Malaysian embassy in New Zealand.

“Every Malaysian student studying abroad must register with Education Malaysia (EM) which is in charge of overseas students. EM will report directly to the ambassador concerned.

“All the students are being monitored. We (UOC) also monitor the students in our area,” he told Bernama after attending the UOC Presidents Conference to mark the Umno General Assembly 2016 at Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC), here today.

Meanwhile, Tanta OUC president Shahrul Naim Mat Ludin said they regularly organise information programmes related to terrorism and extremists to Malaysian students in Egypt.

This was to ensure make that they get a clear picture of the issue and prevent the students from being influenced by militant groups such as Islamic State.

“The move to hold the programme once in every two months is taken after seeing that militant groups are actively recruiting members online,” he added. — Bernama
