KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 24 — Transgenders are being held in special cells inside women prisons nationwide, the Home Ministry disclosed today.

In a written answer to Fuziah Salleh (PKR-Kuantan), the ministry said that transgenders are placed in women's prisons.

“For security reasons, they are held in separate cells from women prisoners,” the ministry said.

Fuziah had asked if the Prisons Department have plans to place transgenders in separate prisons from men due to safety reasons.

The ministry added that as at October this year, there are seven transgenders serving sentences in Malaysian prisons.
