KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 9 ― Tan Sri Dr Ng Yen Yen should be hauled in by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) for allegedly misusing her previous post as tourism minister to spend RM5 million on events in her own constituency, an opposition lawmaker claimed today.
DAP's parliamentary whip Anthony Loke alleged that Ng had spent excessively on 12 tourism events in Raub during her tenure as minister from 2011 to 2013 according to the Parliamentary Public Accounts Committee (PAC) report which was tabled this week.
“She had spent an unreasonable amount of money on 12 ‘tourism events’, all held in Raub, which was her parliamentary constituency,” he told reporters in a press conference outside the Parliament lobby.
“I would like the MACC to look into this. This report was only tabled in Parliament two days ago, there is no action yet,” Loke added later.
The total sum of RM5.2 million spent shown in the report included a Chinese New Year event with industry players held in Raub in 2012 costing RM1.3 million.
Another event where the Tourism Ministry spent over RM900,000 in 2011, was also a gathering with industry players in Raub held during Christmas which Loke said was absurdly priced for a ministry event.
“This is a ridiculous rate, it is unthinkable for one ministry to spend so much on one function,” the Seremban MP said.
“What I want to know is, what was it that she served at the event that it costed so much. Did she serve abalone, or shark fin?
“If she can give a break down of how many people came and what was served there, then maybe we can understand,” he added.
Loke alleged that Ng who headed the minstry at the time should be held responsible for all the unnecessary spending as the PAC report had already claimed that Raub was not a tourist destination with only 0.4 per cent of tourists frequenting the place.
On Monday, the PAC said it seriously viewed the failure of Tourism and Culture Ministry officials to comply with financial procedures set in place in the management of events.
PAC chairman Datuk Hasan Arifin said the ministry should take a more decisive action to ensure that procedures were followed.
