PETALING JAYA, Aug 28 — Police believe the crane operator involved in Thursday’s incident that resulted in the death of a woman driver in Jalan Raja Chulan is still in Kuala Lumpur.
A police source said the suspect was a 51-year-old permanent resident originally from Indonesia or Thailand.
“We have details of his last known address and are searching for him,” the source said.
The operator fled the construction site of Royal Pavilion Hotel in the city centre after a 500kg crane hook fell 20 floors and slammed into a Perodua Kelisa driven by Chin Khoon Sing, 24. Chin died on the spot in the 7.15pm incident.
Meanwhile, MCA president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai demanded that the operator be nabbed and charged.
“The contractor and company that supplied the crane must be hauled up as well,” he said in a statement yesterday.
The transport minister also questioned how such an incident could have occurred in the city centre.
“Where were the authorities responsible in keeping building contractors in check? We must have answers and see remedial actions taken quickly.”
He urged those developing sites near public areas, especially roads, to consider the safety of motorists while carrying out work.
