SHAH ALAM, Aug 24 — The LRT3 light rail network project was launched today in Shah Alam, which will aim to connect the Bandar Utama township in Petaling Jaya with Klang in Selangor.

Spanning 26 stations and 37 kilometres, the LRT3, which will end service at Johan Setia in Klang after passing by Glenmarie and Shah Alam, will start construction in early 2017 and will be concluded before August 31, 2020, Prasarana Malaysia Berhad, the owner of the project, said.

“The LRT3 will be able to transport more passengers compared to other modes of transportation available in the Western Klang Valley at the rate of 36,720 passengers per direction, per hour,” Prasarana said in a statement detailing the project at its launch.

The project, which will cost RM9 billion, excluding land reclamation costs, will also have five integrated stations, allowing transfers to the current LRT network, a future Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system in Shah Alam, the KTM commuter service, and the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT), which will begin operating at end of this year.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak launched the LRT3 project today along with Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali.

The project will also be constructed using the “U Through” technology, which will allow components to be cast elsewhere and assembled at the construction site.

Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai also congratulated Prasarana for the project in a statement.

“These projects have increased the modal share of urban public transportation from 10 per cent in 2009 to 20 per cent by the end of 2015 with a target of 40 per cent by 2030,” he said.

Prasarana had recently completed their LRT extension project on both the Sri Petaling and Kelana Jaya LRT lines, extending connectivity to the suburban enclaves of Subang, USJ, Putra Heights, Puchong and Bukit Jalil.

The extension line began operating on June 30.
