PUTRAJAYA, August 12 — The Northern Corridor Economic Region (NCER) attracted more than RM4 billion in investment this year, exceeding its 50 per cent target for the first half of 2016.

The Northern Corridor Implementation Unit (NCIA) said today the result was a positive key performance index that makes its target of securing RM6.5 billion worth of private investment attainable.

“The NCIA will continue its efforts in broadening private sector participation, ensuring that the social-economic spillovers are equitably distributed among the rakyat,” its chief executive Datuk Redza Rafiq announced.

The NCER covers Kedah, Perak, Perlis and Penang.

Redza said this year’s investment had created more than 7,000 jobs, mainly for skilled workers from the manufacturing and agriculture sectors.

“A major portion of the RM4.7 billion derived from investments in the manufacturing sector,” Redza said.

The announcement was made after the NCIA held its 16th annual meeting at Sri Perdana here.

It also announced the participation of four new private companies, focusing on research and development.

The memorandum of agreement between the companies and NCIA was signed today, witnessed by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.
