KUALA LUMPUR, March 13 — An online campaign in support of Datuk Seri Najib Razak was recently started after tens of thousands signed another petition urging the prime minister to resign.

The “petition” listed on petition website www.change.org to urge support for the prime minister, was started by a Johan Rashdan yesterday and has 1,973 signatories at the time of writing.

“Therefore, WE, THE RAKYAT pledge to OPPOSE all movements to remove Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib Bin Tun Abdul Razak as the Prime Minister of Malaysia and vote that the present democratic [sic] elected government of the Rakyat remains in power till the next general election,” said the petition titled “Support our PM Najib Razak”.

The petition said the Najib administration has carried out its duties in the best interest of the people.

“However, there have been many attempts to discredit, tarnish, smear, remove and even over-throw the democratic [sic] elected government of the Rakyat lead [sic] by Dato’ Sri Mohd. Najib Bin Tun Abdul Razak through various unscrupulous means, movements and methods. These movements are not only unconstitutional but also undemocratic,” said the petition.

The opposing online petition on www.change.org started by activist Azrul Mohd Khalib, which expresses support for the Citizens’ Declaration launched on March 4 by former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Barisan Nasional (BN) veterans, opposition leaders and human rights activists, has 39,023 signatories at the time of writing.

The Save Malaysia movement behind the Citizens’ Declaration has called for Najib’s removal through legitimate means, citing the controversies surrounding state investment firm 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) and the RM2.6 billion deposited in the prime minister’s personal accounts.
