GEORGE TOWN, Feb 14 — Consumers Association of Penang (CAP) has advised Malaysians, including those living in high-rise apartment buildings, to grow their own vegetables.
“The price of greens has been going up especially during festive periods. Coupled with the El Nino effect which is expected to last for quite a while, things can be expected to be bad. Growing your own vegetables can be cost saving,” its education officer N.V. Subbarow said.
He said common household items such as even disused milk or juice bottles can be converted into pots to grow vegetables.
“Even PVC pipes can be cut out to hold soil and later be hung vertically and horizontally to grow greens,” he added.
He said all one needed for a bounty in vegetables was a small space with proper sunlight, water and fertilisers.
Subbarow said this suited those in high-rise residential buildings who had limited space to grow vegetables.
On fertilisers, he said a mix of fish waste with brown sugar kept for a week and sprayed on greens worked wonders.Malaysians, including those living in high-rise apartments, should consider growing their own vegetables as a cost saving measure.
