PETALING JAYA, Dec 25 — Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Paul Low Seng Kuan admitted today that he would be out of job if Malaysians were “god-fearing” and held themselves accountable for their own actions.

The minister, who holds the portfolio of promoting governance and integrity, added that if all Malaysians possess that trait, even Cabinet members would not dare abuse the power entrusted in them and instead practice good governance.

“If we have the fear of god, actually there’s no need for me to be in the government actually,” he said during the Christian Federation of Malaysia’s (CFM) Christmas Day high tea event here.

“If we have this fear, we will be concerned for justice, good governance, integrity, the environment, fairness and we will not abuse the power that is entrusted by us ourselves as leaders. I’m also speaking to my colleagues in cabinet and any leaders in government.”

Low also urged Malaysian Christians to promote the spirit of inclusiveness through the 1 Malaysia concept, which he admitted he still firmly believes in although some of Putrajaya’s policies seem to contradict it.

“Sometimes it looks like we even implement policies which contradict the spirit of 1 Malaysia.

“But nevertheless, I believe in the spirit of 1 Malaysia, because I believe that there is a hope to give us that identity,” he said.

Low, who was reading the prime minister’s speech, also asked Malaysians to focus on the similarities between the different faiths in the country rather than their differences.

“No matter what faith you profess there are always universal values in common the people can share, be they Muslims, Christians, Buddhists, Hindus or others,” said the text of Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s speech.

Najib was invited for today’s event but could not make it as he was overseas, Low explained.
