SHAH ALAM, Dec 1 ― A nostalgic Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad recalled today how previous Umno general assemblies were “fun” events where members could toss around ideas on how to improve the nation.
This year, however, Dr Mahathir said the assembly appears to be more restrictive in nature.
“Well, I regret that it is less open. One of the things about the general assembly is it's a very fun thing. People come, create ideas and knowing that they are doing something for the nation.
“But now I think the idea of working for the nation is so restricted,” Dr Mahathir told reporters when met at a Proton event today.
The former prime minister also confirmed again today that he will attend the coming assembly despite not receiving any invitation just yet.
He said he would regard a recent statement made by party vice-president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi as an “open invitation” to attend the annual affair that kicks off on December 8.
“I have not received any invitation yet but I accept Zahid's statement as an open invitation. It's okay if they don't send me a letter, I will still go,” Dr Mahathir said.
The Umno senior leader also said because he would only be attending the event as a guest, he would not likely be given the opportunity to address delegates.
“I have no chance, I'm just a guest,” he said before leaving.
