GEORGE TOWN, Oct 7 — Police will form a task force to investigate the RM600,000 cowboy-style armed robbery at Chai Leng Park, Prai, last Wednesday.
Penang deputy police chief Datuk A. Thaiveegan said the task force’s priority was to identify the four robbers.
“We have a list of possible suspects. The task force will investigate if the robbers’ modus operandi is similar to that of several other recent robberies,” he said after distributing face masks to policemen and the public in Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah.
The task force will be headed by state Criminal Investigations Department chief SAC Datuk Zakaria Ahmad.
Three men with sledgehammers robbed a jewellery shop in Medan Kurai 1, Chai Leng Park, as an accomplice armed with a pistol in each hand stood guard outside the shop, threatening to shoot if passers-by intervened.
The case is being investigated under Sections 395 and 397 of the Penal Code for gang and armed robbery.
Thaiveegan also said police had arrested four suspects in connection with a fight when two men were attacked by six men at Hong Seng Estate in Mount Erskine on Sept 29.
“Police investigations revealed it was not a gang fight but was caused by a misunderstanding,” he said.
The case is being investigated under Section 148 for possessing weapons at a riot.
