KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 23 ―  A pro-Barisan Nasional group today demanded authorities investigate the wealth of Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s sons over unsubstantiated claims online about their wealth.

Barisan Nasional Supporters Organisation Malaysia (PPBNM) deputy president Dr Lee Nan Sang said that the rakyat deserved to know how the sons of former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad had become multi-billionaires in a short period of time.

But when asked to provide specific offences that Mirzan and Datuk Seri Mokhzani Mahathir should be investigated for, Lee referred reporters to perform a search on Google to find the rumours online.

“If you listen at coffee shops, or check social media, everyone is wondering,” he told reporters today.

“Many are saying that if you become a minister or an ADUN, or an MP, you will surely become rich and powerful. It has become an unhealthy perception among the people of Malaysia.”

He added that the multi-billionaire statuses of both Mirzan and Mokhzani raised questions on the source of capital for their businesses.

He asked whether it was possible that Dr Mahathir had abused his power as prime minister to attain wealth for his children or possibly forced government-linked companies (GLCs) into deals to benefit his children.

“We stress our worries of the possibility that there had been elements of corruption and abuse of power during the era of Tun Mahathir's prime ministership,” he said.

Little-known PPBNM was formed and registered since 2012, as lists among its objectives the goal “to work towards helping society understand the meaning of unity”.

It is headed by its president Datuk Seri Dr Saharuddin Awang Yahya, who is currently on trial with his wife for allegedly deceiving eight people of RM705,000 with promises of a Kelantan datukship.

The organisation most recently made calls for the police to “cancel” Bersih 4 rally calling for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak to resign, which took place on August 29 and 30.
