BUTTERWORTH, April 16 — A highway concessionaire has been urged to build an overhead bridge near the Butterworth Outer Ring Road toll plaza in Prai to prevent more pedestrians from getting killed trying to cross the busy road.
Batu Kawan assemblyman Kasturi Patto, who made the call, said if an overhead bridge was not possible, the concessionaire Lingkaran Luar Butterworth Sdn Bhd should install railings to stop people from crossing the road.
She pointed out that five people from Taman Emas, Taman Prai and Taman Chai Leng have been killed crossing the road over the last two years.
“Many foreigners live in the area and they ignore the signage barring them from crossing the road, especially to go to the wet market in Chai Leng Park,” she said.
Kasturi said the company had installed railings in front of Masjid Seberang Jaya to prevent pedestrians from walking across and why cannot they do it in Prai.
She hoped the concessionaire would look into the matter.
Taman Chai Leng Residents Association chairman M. Turaisingam said they had asked the concessionaire to put up more “Di-larang Melintas” signages in the area but they did not get a reply.
“There is heavy traffic along the stretch between 6pm and 8pm where many people cross, ignoring the risk as they needed to walk more than 300m to use the overhead pedestrian bridge,” he said.
