PADANG BESAR, Sept 6 — When a team of narcotics policemen targeted a car late last month in Wang Kelian, Kaki Bukit about 20km from here, the vehicle turned out to be ‘high-end’ in a different context.
Hidden in the Proton Perdana were 45kg of ganja and 6,000 methamphetamine pills worth a total of RM390,000.
The seizure of the ganja and pills — believed to have been smuggled from Thailand — turned out to be one of the biggest drug busts in the state.
It was the ‘break’ which the police were waiting for, as they moved in closer to crippling a major international dadah trafficking syndicate with local and Thai links.
Padang Besar police chief Supt Che Man Dros said, between Aug 30 and Sept 3, the police detained the car owner in Penang’s South-West District, followed by four accomplices in Wang Kelian and Padang Besar.
He said the suspects in their 30’s and 40s were remanded until Sept 10 to facilitate investigations.
Speaking to reporters here, Che Man said the house was raided, following a surveillance which began on Aug 28.
Later, in a handing-over of duties ceremony, he handed over the baton of office to his deputy, DSP Md Rafee Hassan, who will be acting on the post.
Che Man has been promoted as Negri Sembilan Security and Public Order chief, with the rank of assistant commissioner of police.
The ceremony was witnessed by Perlis police deputy chief ACP Md Zukir Md Isa yesterday evening. — Bernama
