KUALA LUMPUR
, Aug 18 —The government must explain the failure of a tie-up between a local university and the medical school of Johns Hopkins University, one of the world’s best institutions of higher learning, DAP Secretary-General Lim Guan Eng said today.
Johns Hopkins pulled out of Malaysia’s Perdana University Graduate School of Medicine, citing frequent late payments as the reason. The link was terminated last month with payments 12 months overdue.
In a statement, Lim said the failed partnership “reinforces the culture of mediocrity in Malaysian educational standards.”
“Further this is symptomatic of the failure of the BN Federal government’s transformation programme to pursue excellence and the creative city concept due in part to reluctance to embrace the critical success factors of talent, technology and tolerance,” he said.
“Following the abject failure, the Federal government must explain to the public how much it cost for this failed venture,” he said.
Additionally, LIm questioned the worth of the Sekolah Tinggi Peperiksaan Malaysia (STPM) exams when top students are denied university places for their preferred courses.
The Federal government must win back the confidence of our top local students by offering them university places for their preferred courses before trying to attract top foreign universities to Malaysia, he said.
