GEORGE TOWN, Aug 18 — Penang state government has launched an internal investigation into allegations that members of Pasukan Peronda Sukarela (PPS) members assaulted a man last night.

State welfare, caring society and environment committee chairman Phee Boon Poh said he was informed of the incident immediately at about 10.45pm last night.

“We will conduct an internal investigation into this and we have also advised the PPS members involved and witnesses of the incident to also lodge police reports on the incident,” he said when met at his office today.

PPS is a volunteer patrol unit formed by the state government.

Last night, a 51-year-old businessman lodged a police report alleging that he was assaulted  by a group of PPS members dressed in their purple uniforms while he was attending a Chinese temple dinner.

In his police report lodged at the Farlim police station, Ong Eu Soon claimed the group of PPS members beat him up and one of them used a helmet to hit him for no apparent reason.

“This resulted in bruises on my hand and near my eyes,” he claimed in his police report.

Phee said he viewed the allegations seriously and that the state will not tolerate  indiscipline among  PPS members.

“The purpose of PPS is to protect the public, however we will also protect our PPS members against any unsubstantiated allegations,” he said.

Phee, who is in charge of PPS, added that now it has become a police case, they will let police investigate the case.

When contacted, Northeast district police deputy chief Supt Rahman Abdul confirmed receiving the report by Ong.

He said the case will be investigated under Section 147 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt.

Meanwhile, Parti Cinta Malaysia Vice President Datuk Huan Cheng Guan also called a press conference this morning regarding this incident, urging for action against the perpetrators in the incident.

He called on the police to investigate and nab those involved in the altercation.
