GEORGE TOWN, May 20 — DAP’s Bukit Gelugor candidate Ramkarpal Singh Deo rubbished talk today of his alleged sexual preference for men, telling Parti Cinta Malaysia’s (PCM) Huan Cheng Guan that the claim was nothing but “nonsense”.
Ramkarpal, though unperturbed by Huan’s insinuation that he could be gay, told his opponent for the Bukit Gelugor seat that his sexuality has nothing to do with the by-election and questioned his motive for raising such an issue.
“What has this got to do with his campaign? Is it really necessary for him to say such things? It has nothing to do with the by-election at all,” he said when met at the DAP Bukit Gelugor operations centre here.
Jokingly, Ramkarpal later added that Huan may have made such a claim “because he likes me”.
Huan had in a press conference this morning said that there must be “something wrong” with Ramkarpal as he is 38-years-old, still single and had recently posted a picture of a muscular man on his Facebook page.
Responding, Ramkarpal said it was merely a poster of a motivational movie.
Asked if Huan’s allegations had riled him even a little, the lawyer laughed off the issue.
“I’m not in the least upset. Let him say whatever he wants to say, it is just nonsense,” he said.
Ramkarpal’s party senior DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng, however, was less tickled by Huan’s campaign trick.
“Don’t make this (by-election) into a farce. This (gay label) will hang over him long after this, it is really not fair to him or his family,” the Penang Chief Minister said.
Lim and Ramkarpal were at the DAP Bukit Gelugor operations centre to receive an entourage of Himpunan Hijau cyclists led by Wong Tack this afternoon.
Ramkarpal is facing a four-corner fight for the Bukit Gelugor parliamentary seat against Huan and two independent candidates, Abu Backer Sidek Mohammad Zan and Mohd Nabi Bux Mohd Sathar.
The seat was vacated after Ramkarpal’s father, the late MP Karpal Singh, was killed in a road crash last month.
