KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 17 — Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Anifah Aman has confirmed that a Malaysian woman, Angelin Teh, died in a plane crash in the southern town of Pakse, Laos yesterday.
He said Teh and her husband, Joel Babcock, a United States citizen, were travelling from Laos capital, Vientiane to Pakse when the aircraft crash-landed into the Mekong River in bad weather.
“The Laos authorities are still recovering the bodies of the crash victims,” he said in a statement, here, today.
Anifah said Teh’s family had been notified and was currently making arrangements to fly to Laos with the assistance of the ministry and the Malaysian embassy in Laos.
“On behalf of the Government of Malaysia, I would like to offer our sincere condolences to the family of Angelin Teh and the families of others involved in the incident. May they be given strength and solace throughout this difficult period,” he said.
Meanwhile, AP reported that the plane crash involved 49 people from 11 countries.
Meanwhile, a Foreign Ministry spokesman told Bernama, the family of Teh would be leaving for Laos to identify her body.
The victim’s family had been informed and they were preparing to fly to Laos with the assistance of the Foreign Ministry and the Malaysian Embassy in the country, he told Bernama here tonight.
“They were asked to identify the victim’s body. We are not sure when the body will be brought back to Malaysia,” he added. — Bernama
