BANGKOK, June 19 — A family argument over rent ended in dramatic fashion when a 29-year-old man drove his car into a swimming pool at a university campus after his mother refused to pay for his condominium.
The man was rescued and taken to hospital after his vehicle plunged into a pool at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok early yesterday, according to the Bangkok Post.
Police from Pathumwan station were alerted to the incident at about 5.45am, where they found the car submerged in the water.
The driver, who was the vehicle’s sole occupant, was pulled to safety by emergency responders before being taken to Charoenkrung Pracharak Hospital.
Initial police investigations found the incident followed a dispute with his mother over the cost of renting a condominium.
According to investigators, the man became stressed and frustrated after his mother refused to pay the requested 27,000 baht (about RM3,500) a month towards the rental.
Police said he then drove onto the Chulalongkorn University campus and headed towards the pool.
Security guards attempted to stop him before he reached the water, but officers said he accelerated through a barrier fence and the car ended up submerged in the pool.
Images from the scene showed the vehicle almost entirely underwater as rescue teams worked around the pool after daybreak.
Authorities are continuing their investigation into the incident, including examining the man’s state of mind and what may have motivated him to drive into the water.
No other injuries were reported.
