LOS ANGELES, June 14 — A pair of Nike Air Mags sold for an eye-watering price of US$52,500 (RM223,715) on Sunday.
The self-lacing sneakers were made famous by Michael J. Fox’s character Marty McFly in Back to the Future II.
The Air Mags is one of the most sought-after sneakers on the resale market. According to StockX, the average resell price of the 2016 auto-lacing pairs is US$28,055.
The pair that were auctioned off on Sunday were a size 11 and came with a card signed by the shoe’s designer, Tinker Hatfield.
It was sold by Heritage Auctions as a part of their The Future is Now auction.
The online auction house said the winning US$52,500 offer is a world record for a collectible sneaker sold at public auction.
Last year, a pair of Air Mags sold for US$104,000 in a private auction in Hong Kong that raised money for the Michael J. Fox Foundation.
This, however, was no match for the US$190,000 that Michael Jordan’s gold medal Converse recently sold for.
