BEIJING, Dec 1 — Chinese Internet users were all abuzz when this video went viral last week, after it appeared to show cars mysteriously lifted up by an unseen force.

CCTV footage captured three cars at a busy intersection in Xingtai, Hebei levitating for a few seconds, before falling back to the ground.

Shocked bystanders can also been running away in the clip.

Numerous theories were offered to explain the “phenomenon,” but it turns out the real reason why the three cars were sent bouncing like ragdolls is rather more mundane.

According to China broadcaster CCTV, a fallen cable wire had gotten tangled up in the street cleaner vehicle visible to the right of the screen, creating a tripwire.

A van driver was quoted as saying, “I was driving slowly straight ahead. All of a sudden, I was lifted up. The street cleaner car snagged on the wire. The wire just so happened to be underneath our car and it sent us flying.”

No one was injured in the incident.
