PARIS, Nov 10 — At-home chefs and amateur cooks are being invited to take part in a one-day restaurant pop-up event that aims to become “the world’s biggest food carnival”.
The concept for Restaurant Day is simple: Prepare a menu, decide on your opening hours, list the event on the site’s main page and wait for customers to bite.
An initiative out of Finland, Restaurant Day takes place on November 15, and already counts 655 events in 32 countries.
Organisers say their ultimate goal is to make the one-day event an internationally established holiday like Christmas “...when everyone knows what to do, anyone can participate and no one has to make sure it happens anymore”.
They add that events must not be linked to commercial, political or religious interests.
In Paris, a group that calls itself Cuijine, with Vietnamese, Caribbean and Indian cooks, is offering a multi-course menu for between €5 and €10 (RM20.80 to RM41.60), with dishes that include mini Masala burgers, Tunisian tuna empanadas, fried Vietnamese rice, and deconstructed samosas with butternut squash.
Since its inception in 2011, organisers say the event has hosted more than 14,000 pop-up events, feeding 1.6 million diners. Restaurant Day is held about four times a year.
Events have been held in 64 countries, including Canada, the US, England, Japan, Singapore, South Africa, South Korea, Thailand and Uzbekistan.
