KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 4 ― Kuala Lumpur will host the Worldchefs Congress in 2018 which aims to generate an estimated RM11 million in economic impact with an approximate attendance of 1,000 delegates from around the world.

According to the Malaysia Convention & Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB), Malaysia’s success in the bidding reaffirmed KL’s reputation as a culinary haven in the prestigious event organised by the World Association of Chef’s Societies (Worldchefs) founded in 1928 at Sorbonne, Paris.

The event would gather culinary heavyweights to discuss developments in the fields while showcasing the latest offerings in the food and beverages scene at trade shows, it said in a statement.

Malaysia won the bid at the 2014 Worldchefs Congress held recently at Stavanger, Norway because it was able to whet delegates’ appetites where it showcased selected delicacies namely satay, roti jala and chikuteh at its booth, apart from meeting the requirements.

Chief Executive Officer of MyCEB Zulkefli Sharif said the selection was a testament to Malaysia’s vibrant and diverse culinary scene and MyCEB was looking forward to hosting the crème de la crème of the culinary world in 2018.

Meanwhile, Worldchefs Continental Director, Asia, Rick Stephen said the delegates were impressed by the presentation and culinary diversity in Malaysia and found that they wanted a taste of more of what Malaysia had to offer.

Malaysia was the only country in Asia to submit a bid, having outbid Hong Kong to become the continent’s representative in an earlier round.

Besides Norway, the biennial event had previously been hosted by South Korea, Chile, United Arab Emirates, New Zealand and Ireland.
