SAN FRANCISCO, Sept 27 — New release “Battlerite” is getting into position as an accessible, disruptive force in the eSports arena, while former Xbox-exclusive “Gears of War 4,” strategy title “Cossacks 3,” and an indie game festival bundle for Fantastic Arcade 2016 all make an impact on PC download charts for yesterday.

“Battlerite” comes from the same studio that developed “Bloodline Champions,” but this latest creation has a softer visual style and, it would appear, immediate community traction as it vaulted to second spot on Steam's bestseller list.

As an action-oriented team game it fits right alongside leviathans of the genre like tournament specials “Dota 2” and “League of Legends.” Unlike them, it's a retail game with an upfront fee, rather than being free to play with studio revenue generated from optional in-game purchases.

On Gamestop's list, “Gears of War 4” appearing on the PC chart is a result of Microsoft's cross-platform Xbox Anywhere policy recently implemented.

For “Gears of War 4,” it means that owners of the third-person perspective alien shooting adventure on Windows 10 can play with those that have it on Xbox One as well as other PC players; those that buy the digital edition can play the game on Xbox One or Windows 10 PC as they choose.

Historical strategy title “Cossacks 3” has been greeted with a mixed reception — the team behind it may have been on tight deadlines, some have suggested. Offering an enhanced experience that sticks close to the original “Cossacks” formula is an approach with advantages and disadvantages.

Indie game festival Fantastic Arcade takes place September 26-29 in Austin, Texas, and for US$15 (RM61.90) the “2016 Fantastic Arcade Bundle” on Itch.io allows purchasers an at-home window into proceedings: Five games from the creators behind “Downwell,” “Katamari Damacy,” “Canabalt,” “Naut,” “Tetrageddon Games” and “Bernband.”
