KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 16 — Low Wee Wern is optimistic of her ability to pursue the women’s world number one squash player status and the world championship title in five years.

Wee Wern who suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury since April is ready to compete in the National Championship, followed by the Hong Kong Open and World Championship in December.

In the National Championship to be held at the National Squash Centre in Bukit Jalil from Nov 4-8, Wee Wern, the defending champion will face a strong challenge from national number three Delia Arnold, rising stars Rachel Arnold, Teh Min Jie and Vanessa Raj.

“To be back on court will be a big start for me. Initially my doctor did not allow me to play until next year but I’m well enough now and my target is to be able to play without pain and I’m starting to plan for next year, all over again.

“Everybody is looking for the next Nicol (Datuk Nicol David), I think all Malaysian squash players are heading in the right direction and I hope to get back my fitness as soon as possible,” she told Bernama after the official launch of the Qualitas Loyalty Card at Berjaya Times Square here today.

Commenting on squash not being a part of the 2020 Olympic Games, Wee Wern expressed disappointment since she was hoping for squash to be competed in the Olympic Games.

“It’s very disappointing to know that squash is not in the Olympics programme. It would be our best chance (to compete Olympic). We still hope squash will be included in the Olympics. Maybe even later on.

“Every athlete’s dream is to compete in the Olympics and especially for Malaysia, since we are still waiting for the first Olympic gold medal,” she said. — Bernama
