KUALA LUMPUR, October 16 — Hollywood actor and filmmaker Russell Crowe denies his involvement in auditioning for the 1997 romantic comedy hit film, My Best Friend’s Wedding which starred Hollywood actress Julia Roberts.

His retort came following claims made by the film's director P.J. Hogan who told From Hollywood With Love author, Scott Meslow that Crowe had come in and sat down with Roberts for a table read during the casting process for one of the "worst table reads" he had ever experienced.

Crowe responded on Friday to the director's claims via a tweet where the Gladiator star said that Hogan was merely ‘imagining’ the whole thing.

"Pure imagination on behalf of this director. I did not audition for this film.

"I have never done a table read with the actress mentioned. Would be funny if it wasn’t so pointless,” Crowe said in the tweet.

In the last February excerpt published by Vulture, Hogan referred to the casting process as one of the ‘worse table reads’ he had ever experienced.

The film director said that Crowe was his choice for the role of Michael O’ Neal, however it was later played by actor Dermot Mulroney.

"I don’t know what happened. It was one of the worst board readings I’ve ever had. Russell sat across from Julia. He clutched that script, and he stared at it, and he didn’t look at her once.

"He read every line steadily. At one point, Julia was literally leaning over the table, staring, like inches from Russell’s face, trying to make eye contact. And he won’t look at her,” Hogan had been reported as saying in the publication.

He added that Crowe approached him after the table read and said, ‘I thought that went pretty well’ and that’s when he decided not to cast Crowe in the film.

My Best Friend’s Wedding came out back in June 20, 1997, also starred Cameron Diaz, Rupert Everett as well as Carrie Preston.

The film raked in a total of US$299.3 million (RM1.4 billion) at the worldwide box-office.
