LOS ANGELES, Aug 8 — On Twitter, screenwriter Nicole Perlman revealed that she has indeed written a movie centred on the Marvel character played by Scarlett Johansson in “Iron Man 2” and “The Avengers.”

Perlman, who co-wrote “Guardians of the Galaxy” with James Gunn, specified in a tweet that she wrote the “Black Widow” screenplay in 2010-2011 but is “not actively developing it right now.” She followed up with a second message stating her inability to say when the project might land in theatres. “I hope soon, but I know that Marvel has a lot on their plates,” she concluded.

Rumours on a possible Black Widow solo film began to swirl after Disney and Marvel dated the release of five new features between 2017 and 2019, leaving fans to speculate on which superheroes will feature in each.

First played by Scarlett Johansson in 2010 in “Iron Man 2,” Black Widow aka Natasha Romanoff was also seen in “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” and the two “Avengers” movies. But the character, a Russian spy working for S.H.I.E.L.D., has never starred in her own movie.

Speculation on the subject has led to some sources digging up FemPop’s 2011 interview with “X-Men” screenwriter David Hayter, who revealed that he wrote a script on Black Widow in the early 2000s. He explained that the project was ultimately dropped once the studio decided the market for “female vigilante movies” was saturated at the time.

So far Marvel has yet to announce any concrete details on the subject. Nonetheless, Sony’s recent announcement of a female-led “Amazing Spiderman” spin-off seems likely to inspire Marvel to draw on its own cast of super heroines. — AFP Relaxnews
