KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 18 — Total vehicle sales in July slipped to 58,646 units from 60,269 units recorded in the same month last year.  In a statement today, the Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA) said the lower volume was due to weaker sales in both passenger and commercial vehicle segments.

“Sales of passenger vehicles in July fell to 52,636 units from 53,576 units in the same month last year while commercial vehicle sales dropped to 6,010 units from 6,693 units previously.

“For the January to July period, total vehicle sales went down to 380,830 units from 393,425 units in the same period last year.  “Month-on-month, however, sales volume was 2.1 per cent, or 1,209 units, higher than June due to the Hari Raya festive season campaigns and aggressive sales promotions,” it said.

MAA said the total vehicle production in July declined to 40,655 units compared with 41,012 units in the same month last year.  “Passenger vehicle production for the month rose to 37,691 units from 37,390 units in the same month last year while commercial vehicle production was reduced to 2,964 units from 3,622 units.

“Vehicle production for January to July period rose to 368,319 units from 358,904 units in the same period last year,” it said.

On the outlook for August, MAA said, sales volume was expected to be slightly higher due to better promotional campaigns by car companies and longer working months.—BERNAMA
