KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 3 — Pakatan Harapan’s candidate for Bangi, Syahredzan Johan, said he will raise issues related to public transport, human rights, data privacy and draconian laws should he be given the mandate in the upcoming general election (GE15).

“I will fight for the rights of the people and pay particular attention to public transport issues because this is an urban seat. I will also raise issues on data privacy,” said Syahredzan here after the launch of his election operations centre.

The DAP central executive committee (CEC) member had been vocal in questioning the government’s steps and measures towards protecting users’ privacy in the MySejahtera mobile application earlier this year.

He added that his experience as a lawyer had also given him the opportunity to fight for those unlawfully detained and deprived of access to legal representation.

“I met parents from Nigeria who couldn’t meet their children because they were detained here, and these are the things we need to change.

“I entered politics after concluding that the only way to change Malaysia is by first changing the law.

“And by changing the law, you need to change the ones in power,” he added.

Syahredzan then pledged to help Bangi residents to solve other more pressing issues, such as traffic jams and creating an ecosystem for online businesses if elected.

When asked about the prospect of winning the election, Syahredzan said it is best not to underestimate his opponents as they will give the best that they can.

“We want to win this seat for PH, and I’m not trying to get a huge majority like what Ong had in the last election.

“There are many ways to enter Putrajaya and Bangi is one of the roads to get there,” he added.

The launch ceremony was attended by around 60 supporters of all ages and from all walks of life.

The incumbent Bangi MP Ong Kian Ming was also present and had promised to lend his support to Syahredzan during the election process.

Ong, the former deputy minister of international trade and industry, had a 68,768 majority in the 14th general election in 2018, but has decided not to seek re-election.

Bangi, a Selangor federal seat, is expected to see a three-cornered fight between Syahredzan, MCA’s Hoh Hee Lee, and PAS’ Muhammad Nazrul Hakim Md Nazir.

Malaysia goes to the polls on November 19.
