KUALA LUMPUR, July 2 — The Indonesian authorities have arrested Sungai Besar Umno chief Datuk Seri Jamal Yunos, who has been on the run from the police, Home Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said today.

“I was informed at 6.15pm that the Indonesian National Police had succeeded in arresting Jamal.

“The Malaysian Royal Police have been contacted by their Indonesian counterpart to facilitate his extradition back to Malaysia,” Muhyiddin said in a statement.

Muhyiddin thanked the Indonesia police for their assistance in locating Jamal.

Jamal was first detained by the police on May 22 while he was receiving medical treatment at Ampang Puteri Specialist Hospital.

He was being investigated for various offences, including under Section 34 of the Arms Act 1960 for carrying a firearm while drunk or disorderly.

On May 25, while undergoing treatment, he went missing from the hospital while in police custody just as court officials were about to process bail orders against him.

In spite of his absence, Jamal managed to retain his post as Sungai Besar Umno chief at the recent party polls.
