PETALING JAYA, April 26 — It’s been a long time coming, but it is finally here: a marriage of Malaysia's national dish and the McDonald’s burger.

Starting today, Malaysians may now gorge themselves on nasi lemak sandwiched between two sesame-seed buns.

Dubbed simply the “Nasi Lemak Burger”, it comes with almost every element of the nation’s favourite dish: a chilli bun, cucumber slices, fried egg, sambal, a santan-flavoured fried chicken thigh, and caramelised onions

Missing, however, are the fried anchovies and groundnuts that customarily complete the meal.

The offering is time-limited, according to McDonald’s, and it remains to be seen if the burger can earn itself a permanent spot on the fast food chain's menu.

The burger was first introduced to Singapore last year, where McDonald’s sold a staggering 750,000 burgers in just two weeks.

Its popularity was such the firm came in with an encore promotion in August the same year.

McDonald’s should expect a similar stampede in Malaysia.

While the nasi lemak burger is new to McDonald’s Malaysia, it is not the first in the country.

For instance, local chain myBurgerLab had replicated the burger following the Singapore promotion, which proved to be a hit among burger aficionados.

From past reviews, the McDonald’s Singapore's Nasi Lemak Burger lived up to expectations and should set the bar for Malaysia.
