GERIK, March 1 ― Two teenagers drowned today after going swimming with their friends in a river here.
A Fire and Rescue Department spokesman said the department had received a distress call at 2.05pm today.
“The victims, estimated at 16 and 17 years, had gone swimming at Lata Kulim in Kampung Kenayat here with their friends after school,” he said.
“Initial reports suggested that one of the victims had got into difficulty and his friend tried to save him but failed, before both of them went under the water,” he added, noting that the depth of the water was estimated at about 3.5 meters.
The first body was fished out at 3.10pm while the second body was found at 3.28pm.
Their remains were later handed over to police.
Rescue operations were called off at 4.45pm.
At press time, police have yet to release the victims’ identities.
