GEORGE TOWN, Jan 17 — Penang Island City Council (MBPP) secretary Yew Tung Seang has been appointed the new mayor of Penang Island to succeed retiring Datuk Maimunah Mohd Sharif on Saturday.

State Local Government, Traffic Management and Flood Mitigation Committee chairman Chow Kon Yeow said the Penang State Executive Council had accepted a recommendation to appoint architect Yew as the new mayor.

The state government also appointed Addnan Mohd Razali as the new MBPP secretary, also effective Saturday, he told reporters here today.

Maimunah opted to retire on Jan 19 to take up the post of executive director of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN‑Habitat) in Nairobi, Kenya.

Chow said the handing over of duties of the new mayor would take place on Friday while the official swearing-in was expected to take place on Monday.

Maimunah, 56, who hails from Kuala Pilah, Negeri Sembilan, is the first Asian to be appointed the executive director of UN-Habitat. She takes over from Joan Clos of Spain. — Bernama
