KENINGAU, Dec 17 — At least 10 houses in Kampung Pampang collapsed and were swept off in a flash flood which hit the district since noon today, caused by water from Sungai Pampang overflowing.

District Fire and Rescue Department senior fire officer 1, Jaree  Mohamad said there was no loss of life as all the residents had evacuated to safe areas.

Jaree said several other homes in Kampung Contoh were also flooded in about half a metre of water.

A Bernama check in Kampung Limbawan at about 9 pm today revealed the main road into the village had been closed after the water level of Sungai Pampang continued to rise.

Several traffic police personnel were also seen guiding traffic going into the village and they also advised the residents to move their vehicles to high ground along the roads leading to the Keningau Town Mosque.

Liawan state assemblyman Datuk Sairin Karno who visited the affected areas advised the residents in flood-prone areas to evacuate to safe places.

Meanwhile in Kota Belud district, 74 flood victims from 37 families were moved to the temporary evacuation centre at Tun Said community hall at 9.40 pm after their village was flooded following continuous rain since noon.

According to a statement from the Sabah Civil Defence Force, to date 12 villages in the district have been hit by floods while six roads, namely Jalan Kampung Linau, Jalan Kampung Menunggui, Jalan Bobot, Jalan Kota Belud, Jalan Siasai Tamu, Jalan Kampung Marajah-Kampung Donggoi were cut off due to the floods. — Bernama
