JOHOR BARU, Nov 8 — Several areas in Pontian district were affected by flash floods this evening due to the uncertain weather condition.

Johor Health, Environment, Education and Information Committee chairman Datuk Ayub Rahmat said heavy rain since afternoon and the 3.4 metres of high tide had caused the flash floods in the low-lying areas as the drainage was unable to accommodate a large amount of water.

“For now, six houses in Kampung Sungai Buntu and a house in Kampung Kebun Baru Sungai Durian have been affected by the flash floods,” he said in a statement, here today.

However, there was no evacuation centre opened since the situation was still under control and safe.

Meanwhile in Penang, the Penang City Council (MBPP) assured that the new housing area in Beverly Hills, Tanjung Bunga, here is safe.

Its Engineering Department director Addnan Mohd Razali said a large sinkhole which became visible after a road leading to the newly-built housing area collapsed early Sunday morning due to the continuous rain, would not affect the residents in the surrounding areas since it had not been opened to the public yet.

“We have asked the developer and the project consultant to check and see the situation. We have asked them to temporarily stop the project to give way for the mitigation works and see what had collapsed.

“The housing area is not open yet for the public…it has not even obtained the OC (occupation certificate) yet. So we assured the area is safe since it is located at the end of the area,” he told reporters, here today. — Bernama
