GEORGE TOWN, Nov 5 — The storm that ravaged Penang has now cut tap water supply to three residential areas on the island that is certain to disrupt flood clean-up efforts.

Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP) issued a brief statement today that the storm has led to debris and earth choking water flows to the Waterfall Treatment Plant and the Guillemard Water Treatment Plant on the island.

“These treatment plants are temporarily unable to treat and supply treated water,” it said.

The unscheduled water supply interruption will affect the leafy neighbourhoods of Jesselton Heights and adjacent areas, like Jalan Air Terjun as well as homes near the Penang Botanic Gardens. Some areas in Pulau Tikus, especially those on higher ground, are also affected.

Residents along Air Rajah Road, Gottlieb Raod, Fettes Park, Pepper Estate, Elsedale Estate, Hong Seng Estate, Mount Erkine and nearby areas will also experience low water pressure.

“PBAPP has initiated emergency response actions to normalise water supply to all areas, including pumping additional treated water from the Sungai Dua Water Treatment Plant in Seberang Prai,” it said.

PBAPP also confirmed that the storm has brought down trees, mud and debris along the road to Air Itam Dam.

“The road to Air Itam Dam has been temporarily closed until further notice,” it said.
