KUALA LUMPUR, June 16 — Deputy Education Minister Datuk P. Kamalanathan said a Sarawakian teacher who allegedly sodomised a student over 50 times could be fired if found guilty.

According to The Star newspaper, Kamalanathan also said the Education Ministry will ensure the man is prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

He also reminded teachers and students to be vigilant over suspicious behaviour, and to report such matters to the higher authorities.

“Students should always alert an adult if they find the behaviour of a peer or teacher to be off. Do not wait,” he said.

Kamalanathan said professionals from the Health Ministry will be engaged to help the victim if counselling by the school is insufficient.

Sarawakian police yesterday arrested a 42-year-old teacher on suspicion of sodomising a former teenage student at least 50 times in the past two years at Mukah, Sarawak.

The victim, a boarding school student, had been frequently invited by the teacher to spend the night at a budget hotel in Sibu, the police said.

The teenage victim’s ordeal was only brought to light when he could no longer endure it after being sodomised five times during the February-May period this year and after he informed another teacher.

The teacher will be investigated under the Penal Code for the offence of unnatural sex.
