KUALA LUMPUR, June 16 — The police have thwarted a terror attack planned by an Indonesian national against them, Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said today.
He told a press conference in the federal police headquarters in Bukit Aman here, that the man was detained in Slim River, Perak and was found with an Indonesian passport and documents relating to jihadist group Islamic State (IS).
“On June 12, we caught an Indonesian in Slim River for his involvement in Daesh, and he also planned to attack the police,” Khalid said, using the Arabic acronym for IS.
In addition, three more IS sympathisers — two Indonesians and a native Sabahan — were arrested before they flew to Marawi in southern Philippines to join the IS-linked Maute group there.
“We detected their intention and we caught them before they flew off to Marawi City,” Khalid told reporters.
He said three newly-bought “Rambo” hunting knives were also found with the trio, and claimed that they were meant to be used against the police if detained.
Khalid said that those arrested were all males aged between 30 and 40 years old, and were all odd job workers.
He said the suspects were all detained under the Penal Code with the invocation of the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012.
Khalid told reporters that the police are also on high alert for the South-east Asian Games (SEA Games)
“I have said before. From now till the Sea Games, we are highly prepared to face threat from any parties. Not just Daesh, but anyone who try to disrupt the smooth flow of the SEA Games later,” he said.
