SHAH ALAM, June 10 — A bodyguard foiled a RM200,000 robbery when he opened fire at two robbers, wounding one and sending the accomplice fleeing, outside a bank near the Shah Alam City Council building yesterday afternoon.

The guard's employer, a 58-year-old Datuk Seri who owns a scrap metal business, sustained slash wounds when one of the robbers attacked him.

The businessman and the guard were leaving the bank when they were confronted by two men weilding a parang and an axe.

The duo, in their 20s, slashed the businessman and grabbed the bag of cash. On seeing this the guard, in his 30s, opened fire hitting one of the robbers in the butt while the other fled.

Shah Alam police chief Assistant Commissioner Shafien Mamat said: “The bodyguard opened fire and grabbed the bag of cash from the robbers. During the scuffle with the robbers, the bodyguard sustained minor injuries.

“The accomplice fled leaving a motorcycle at the scene,” Shafien said.

People in the nearby mosque alerted police of the incident.

Shafien said the injured suspect was sent to Shah Alam Hospital.

“We have identified the accomplice and are tracking him down.”

Shafien said checks of the suspects’ motorcycle found that it had been reported stolen in Cheras last month.

He said they had obtained closed-circuit television recording from a Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) building nearby.
