SHAH ALAM, May 12 — Four robbers who were killed in a shootout with the police in front of the Malaysian Institute of Translation and Books (ITBM) in Kuala Lumpur yesterday were wanted for 30 armed robbery cases in Selangor.
State police chief Datuk Seri Abdul Samah Mat said based on statistics, the spate of robberies including the one involving a businessman who had just withdrawn money from a bank yesterday, were recorded since early last year.
He said the total losses in each case were between RM30,000 and RM200,000, adding the robbers targeted mostly businessmen who had made large withdrawals from the bank.
He was speaking to reporters after witnessing the handing-over of duty ceremony involving the new Selangor Narcotics CID chief, ACP Amarjit Cher Singh and ACP Amran Ramli who takes over as Bukit Aman Narcotics CID (Zone II) assistant director (Intelligence) post.
In the 12.35pm incident yesterday, four men comprising three Indonesians and an Indonesian permanent resident aged between 37 and 49 were gunned down while trying to rob a Chinese national who had withdrawn RM40,000 for a business transaction at ITBM.
On the robbery at a restaurant in Taman Melawati, Ampang near here on Saturday, Abdul Samah said a special team had been set up to investigate the case.
In the incident at 9.30pm, six men armed with machetes and wearing full-face helmets dashed into the premises and ordered the patrons to hand over their valuables. — Bernama
