KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 21 ― A Malaysian military plane crashed at the airbase in Teluk Ayer Tawar near Butterworth, Penang during a training flight this evening, killing one person and wounding three others on board.

The Beechcraft 200 plane belonging to the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) went down about 5.18pm, national news agency Bernama reported.

The dead is believed to be the pilot, Bernama added, citing an unnamed police source.

The three injured have been sent to the Seberang Jaya Hospital for medical treatment.

The news agency also reported that the ill-fated aircraft had been used for maritime surveillance by the 16 Squadron based at another airase in Subang Jaya, Selangor.

According to the report, the 16 Squadron is in charge of providing early warnings as well as report the identification of vessels in territorial waters and the Exclusive Economic Zone.

It also monitors and reports on the activities at oil rigs, fishing zones, occupied and claimed reefs, and entry of illegal immigrants and also activities that contribute to marine pollution.
