NIBONG TEBAL, Oct 18 — The police shot dead a restricted resident following a 10km car chase in which the man drove a car and rammed three police motorcycles and a patrol car early today.

Mohamad Ilya Ismail, 21, who had previous criminal records for drugs, died on the spot in the 5am incident.

The car whose two tyres were flattened by police gunfire, skidded and plunged into a ditch.

Mohamad Ilya’s 26-year-old accomplice was detained to facilitate investigations.

Seberang Perai Selatan police chief, Supt Shafee Abd Samad said initial investigations revealed Mohamad Ilya did not report to the police station as required under conditions stated for a restricted resident.

According to police records, Mohamad Ilya Ismail, 21, was detained under Restricted Residence over a drug case last year.

Shafee said earlier, a police team on patrol in Taman Jawi Permai here stumbled on two men in a vehicle, who behaved suspiciously.

Despite a police order to alight from the vehicle, the duo escaped in the car towards Jalan Sungai Duri, ramming three police motorcycles and a patrol car.

“We pursued the car for more than 10km from Taman Jawi Permai, Sungai Bakap via Jalan Sungai Daun before firing several shots at its tyres, flattening two.

“The car then tried to crash into another police car, forcing us to shoot in the direction of the vehicle, killing the driver before the vehicle skidded into a ditch,” said Shafee. — Bernama
