MALACCA, Sept 27 — An 18-year-old woman pleaded not guilty in the Ayer Keroh Sessions Court here today to a charge of causing the death of her newborn baby.

The accused, Nuruljannah Azalan, entered the plea before Judge Norma Ismail.

She was charged with intentionally killing her daughter by suffocating the baby with her hand and a mattress sheet.

The offence was committed at a house in Solok Balik Bukit Palah, Malacca Tengah at about 6am on Sept 20.

If convicted, the offence under Section 309B of the Penal Code carries a maximum prison sentence of 20 years and a fine.

Earlier, deputy public prosecutor Ifa Sirrhu Samsudin appealed to the court not to grant bail but the accused’ counsel Andrew Lourdes requested that bail be granted as she was still very young.

Norma allowed bail at RM15,000 in one surety and set Oct 27 for mention of the case. — Bernama
