KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 13 ― Police are on high alert for signs of terror threats around the country and not just Penang, national police chief Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar clarified today.
Rumours have been circulating that the northern state of Penang is being targeted for an attack by Islamist militants linked to global terror network Islamic State (IS), with Malaysia Day falling on Friday.
“Not only in Penang, but all over the country. We will increase our preparedness towards any threat, be it from the IS or any other party that wants to disrupt our Malaysia Day celebrations,” the Inspector-General of Police told reporters after attending a Hari Raya Haji function at the national police headquarters in Bukit Aman here.
Khalid said all police personnel have been put on high alert during this period to ensure public safety, especially for the national-level celebration that will take place in Bintulu, Sarawak this year.
He gave an assurance that the security checks will not mar the celebrations.
“All is in place. Insyallah, it will all go well,” he added.
Malaysia was founded on September 16, 1963 when the Malay Federation together with Sabah, Sarawak and Singapore joined up, though Singapore was expelled just two years later.
