KUALA LUMPUR, July 26 — Selena Gomez's attire during her concert in Shah Alam was selected to meet local sensitivities and norms, the US pop star's fan group said on Twitter yesterday.
Addressing complaints by groups such as PAS against her “sexiness”, Gomez chose clothing that covered up most of her body and removed “too sexual” visuals from the event.
“New outfit out of respect for the culture and religion in Malaysia!
“Selena listened to the City Council and covered herself up! No need for protestors. Stay safe everyone. X,” the fan-operated @SelenaHQ account wrote.
A Muslim group, Perkid, had carried out a protest outside the concert at Stadium Malawati last night, in the form of a special prayer session.
Political party PAS had sought to block the concert by claiming that a performance by Gomez, whom they described as “sexy, would be an affront to Muslims during the month of Syawal.
Gomez’s concert was part of her “Revival” tour and was held at the Stadium Melawati in Shah Alam.
Concerts held by international musicians and bands in Malaysia frequently see opposition from hardline Muslim groups and PAS Youth in addition to strict regulations from authorities, causing many to give the country a miss during their Southeast Asian tours.
