KUALA LUMPUR, June 24 ― The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is now globally recognised thanks to the effort of its outgoing chief Tan Sri Abu Kassim Mohamed, members of its Anti-Corruption Advisory Board said today.

In separate statements, five members of the board congratulated Abu Kassim on his appointment as a board member and visiting fellow at the Austria-based International Anti-Corruption Academy (IACA).

“Through his mission while leading SPRM, the agency is seen as continuously achieving its mission by making Malaysian society free of corruption aside from making SPRM more dynamic and progressive,” Tan Sri Datuk Dr Yeoh Oon Kheng said, referring to MACC in its Malay acronym.

“Besides, Tan Sri Dr Abu Kassim successfully achieved his mission in turning SPRM into a world-class agency and this is proven through his appointment as a visiting expert at the International Anti Corruption Academy (IACA).”

The other members of the advisory board who congratulated Abu Kassim included Tan Sri Musa Hassan, Datuk Mohd Noor Abdullah, Datuk Seri Azman Ujang and Tan Sri Datuk Dr Hadenan Abdul Jalil.

Abu Kassim will be stepping down from MACC as chief commissioner on August 1.

He told a news conference yesterday that the decision was not made under any pressure and added that it was his third attempt to leave the post.

Abu Kassim was appointed MACC chief commissioner in 2010 and had previously served in various capacities within the commission and its predecessor, the Anti-Corruption Agency.

He has also been with the International Criminal Police Organisation’s anti-corruption unit since 1997.

He is currently an adjunct professor in Universiti Industri Selangor's Social Sciences and Education Faculty.

Abu Kassim also holds an honorary doctorate of laws from Universiti Teknologi Mara.
